Description

The volume consists of four extensive narratives, all multi-layered, although the common thematic axis can be considered the power of coincidence, which, in one way or another, dominates the grotesque world of the Swiss author.

In the artistic "Fall," a tightly-knit "political thriller" unfolding behind the iron curtain, in a session of the Party's "Political Secretariat," the tremendous child of Swiss letters examines with subtle humor the impact of chance on the course of History, offering in passing a chillingly accurate critique of "existing socialism" - although, as noted, the unnamed Kremlin is merely the backdrop, since the action, the intrigues, the struggle for dominance could just as easily be placed in the Pentagon or any other closed circle of power.

"Abu Hanifa and Anan ben David" is an allegory of the Arab-Israeli conflict, a glimpse into the shared fate of two peoples through the surreal story of two individuals, a Jew and an Arab, in what superficially separates them and what deeply unites them.

The world of crime and the suffocating New York - as if sprung from a 1970s detective film - provide the setting for the existential "neo-noir" "Smithy," featuring a protagonist who specializes in disposing of bodies...

Finally, in "The Death of the Pythia," Durrenmatt, with attention to detail and the precision of a Swiss watchmaker, retells stories from the Theban Cycle, reimagining them and concocting (without neglecting his beloved existential and political reflections) a devilishly enjoyable farce about the essence and appearance of things and the randomness - or lack thereof - of events.

This collection serves as a first-rate introduction to the work of the great Swiss author and simultaneously marks Durrenmatt's "return" to the catalog of Rois Publications, with new editions of his five titles that had previously been released but had long been out of print, as well as the release of other works of his, for the first time in Greek.
