Description
In this edition, the painting work of Spyros Papagiannopoulos is presented. Coming from a family of architects and painters, Papagiannopoulos was born and raised in Athens, but chose to live on islands in the Aegean Sea: Anafi, Paros, Antiparos, Crete. The sea, painting, and fishing boats were the great passions of his life. Most of his work is found in murals in taverns, bars, shops, or houses. As a self-taught painter, he avoided any recent influence of the mainstream, adopting a timeless, folk-inspired, unconventional style. Technical skill and craftsmanship were not his priority - not even his goal. While he possessed technically skilled expression and precise, comprehensive, and expressive drawing, he did not seek to transfer and develop them in his monumental painting. On the contrary, he adopted a folk-inspired expressive style and blended it with his own manner to tell his stories.
As noted by Thanasis Moutsopoulos, the painting style of Spyros Papagiannopoulos "could be described as a mixture of folk painting with some indeterminate contemporary elements, rich in details, historical information, and small references. These 'indeterminate elements' may be memories from his studies of painting, perhaps particularly of surrealism, possibly of De Chirico, perhaps even a knowledge of French comics." In other words, Papagiannopoulos was not exactly "folk", but rather a very well-read young man who explored the folk culture of his country, while simultaneously searching for his own personal expressive path.
