The Ascetic Discourses of Saint Isaac the Syrian stem from his personal experiences and are the fruit of his living charismatic theology. Beyond the spiritual and theological authority that characterizes the work of Saint Isaac, the Syrian father seems to have an excellent understanding of the deep psychology of the human soul. By delving into the thought of Saint Isaac, this work brings to the modern era elements and data that reveal that the teachings of the holy hesychast—recorded fifteen centuries ago—regarding psychosomatic illness and the discovery of psychosomatic health can stand with reliability and authority alongside contemporary views of Psychiatry and Psychology. Even psychologists and psychiatrists themselves have recently begun to delve into the ever-relevant work of the theology and anthropology of the hesychasts. The Ascetic Discourses of the hesychast father are proven to present a coherent and fruitful perspective concerning the etiology and therapeutic approach to anxiety, melancholy, neuroses, severe depression, and suicides. The message of the words of the holy hesychast is not addressed only to hermits and recluses. It is mainly addressed to laypeople, to rulers, to children, to adults and the elderly, to the rich and the poor, to scientists and the illiterate, to people of every nationality and race, to prisoners, to the addicted, to those suffering mentally and physically, to all the weary but also the indolent.
