After the award-winning "City of the Absent", Alexandros Massavetas leaves Constantinople for a series of journeys in the history and present of Asia Minor. This book covers the southern coast of Propontis and the beaches of the Aegean Sea. It aspires to be the first volume of a trilogy that will expand throughout the scattered memories of Asia Minor.
The author begins his wanderings from Bithynia and Mysia, focusing on the memories and traces of Romania and reviving the lost ethnic mosaic of the region. He continues to Aeolis, focusing on Ayvalik and Pergamon. In cemented Smyrna, he records the living history through the testimonies of the last Levantines and Jews of the city, as well as the last elderly voices of the Smyrna dialect. Descending the beaches of the Aegean, Massavetas crosses Ionia, ending up at the ruined monasteries of Lake Bafa and Latmos, the granite mountain with its eerie landscapes.
The perspective of space gives rise to an excavation of the memory of multiple civilizations and eras, in places where the past often weighs heavily. Here, history resembles an unreadable palimpsest, where each conqueror tried to bury the memory of their predecessors by imposing their own narrative.
The lever of history is enriched with the personal memories of the author's fellow travelers, such as Akylas Millas and Kostas Stamatopoulos, as well as the narratives of the many individuals encountered along the way. The pages of the book radiate the last rays of a world threatened by oblivion and, even more so, by the monstrous onslaught of concrete.
