The present work is the result of the author's extensive research in primary and secondary sources. The text primarily examines the issue of the establishment, operation, and most importantly, the actions of the Armed Forces, from the period of King Otto to the end of the armed conflict between the National Army and the Democratic Army of Greece. In two volumes, it encompasses the entire history of modern Greek state and its gradual expansion through the liberation of territories inhabited by Greek populations. Succinctly, it examines in chronological order the Greco-Turkish War of 1897, the Balkan Wars, World War I, the Asia Minor Campaign, World War II, and the subsequent events until 1949. The work is not a dry presentation of military events, as the author does not overlook the developments in the internal political arena, especially those directly or indirectly related to the Armed Forces. Additionally, there is a connection between the events and the developments in the international environment, which had a decisive impact on Greek history.
Great emphasis is placed on "difficult" periods for modern Hellenism (such as the "national division" and the Asia Minor Campaign), while an effort has been made to interpret certain points of Greek history, such as the rights of protection over Greece claimed by the three Great Powers of the Entente until 1920, the causes of the electoral defeat of the Liberals in November of that year, and others.
The book consists of two parts: the first concerns the historical context, which is highlighted through a plethora of published sources; the second is composed of certain characteristic incidents from the actions of the first eight divisions of the Greek Army (I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII), as presented in the military archives. The presentation of events is done with sobriety, without exaggerations or lyricism. Therefore, the use of adjectives is avoided as much as possible. Additionally, there is scientific documentation through 4,900 or more citations. Finally, the work is enriched by dozens of maps from the Army History Directorate, as well as a plethora of (mostly unpublished) photographs.
