Description

The involvement of Greece in World War II has been extensively examined in Greek literature from various perspectives. However, the purely military dimension continues to present new fields of exploration. In 2010, Dourios Ippos Publications presented the unique work "Weapons and Shootdowns of the Greek Air Force 1940-1941", the work of an active member of the Greek Armed Forces, Lieutenant Commander Nikolaos Christofilis. Now, a specialized topic "The Equipment of Greece 1936-1940" is presented to the Greek audience, which concerns the armament effort developed by the country in order to prepare as much as possible for the expected global conflict. The work is based on unpublished material found in a private archive and concerns the official proceedings of the sessions of the Supreme Council of National Defense (ASEA), specifically the decisions taken in 75 sessions of it, between January 1936 and October 1940.

Through the study of the proceedings, the reader will have the opportunity to understand the extent of the effort undertaken, as the government is presented with the entirety of the armament programs and the three branches of the Armed Forces, from the procurement of wireless equipment, artillery, helmets, portable weapons, firearms, vehicles, engines to airplanes, submarines, and destroyers. Also revealed to a significant extent are projects such as the establishment of shipyards, the reinforcement of coastal defense, the licenses acquired for domestic assembly/construction of a variety of materials from ammunition to aircraft, and generally the effort to develop Greek military industry.

The work is accompanied by an extensive introduction, which presents the defensive preparation of Greece after the Asia Minor Catastrophe until 1935, so that the reader can understand the huge gap in the country's military equipment, which was largely covered by the government of Ioannis Metaxas. At the same time, the obstacles or problems that arose are mentioned, making the reading of the main part of this work more comprehensible. Finally, detailed tables are presented with a chronological sequence of signed contracts for major equipment, as well as the overall status of the Greek Armed Forces regarding their armament on October 28, 1940, distinguishing them by their operational value and the chronological placement of their acquisition.

The work has a significant technical character, with the presentation of specifications for the acquisition of weapon systems, economic data, includes decisions for the acquisition of material that was ultimately not implemented, and in general gives the reader a sense of the complexity of this Greek endeavor, shedding light on a dimension of how Greece managed to get involved in a dignified and ultimately victorious manner in World War II.
