Description

The Sony α9 III is designed with the needs and demands of professional photographers in mind. Every update to this camera - from the sensor to the size, button layout, and menu functions - has been made to respond to specific requests and feedback from the imaging community.

The capabilities of the α9 III allow photographers to capture things that have not yet been captured. Additionally, the Sony α9 III is ideal for professional photographers who wish to capture moments that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

A New Move

Featuring the world's first full-frame image sensor with a global shutter system, the Alpha 9 III sets new standards, capturing fast-moving subjects without any image distortion and preserving split-second moments with stunning detail.

The α9 III features the world's first 24.6 MP full-frame stacked CMOS image sensor with a global shutter system. Unlike a rolling shutter sensor that captures images sequentially from the top row of pixels to the bottom, the newly developed Exmor RS™ image sensor exposes and reads all pixels simultaneously, allowing the camera to capture fast-moving subjects without any distortion. Combined with a maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 second (1/16,000 second during continuous shooting), the α9 III revolutionizes professional photography.

Continuous shooting at 120 fps without blackout

The α9 III is characterized by speed and precision, allowing it to effortlessly capture decisive moments. It is capable of continuous shooting in bursts of up to 120fps with full AF/AE tracking, all without viewfinder blackout, and the highly advanced AI processing unit recognizes subjects with remarkably high accuracy and reliability.

Capture Moments in Seconds

At 1/80,000 second, the maximum shutter speed of the a9 III facilitates capturing fast-moving subjects in almost any circumstance. Additionally, a compatible Sony flash unit (such as the HVL-F60RM or the HVL-F46RM) can sync at all shutter speeds, eliminating the abrupt, non-linear drop in lighting that occurs with high-speed sync (HSS) and ensuring even illumination across the entire image.

Exmor RS image sensor with global shutter system

The new full-frame image sensor with a global shutter is equipped with 24.6 million effective pixels, a stacked CMOS architecture, and built-in memory. This offers high resolution, overwhelming speed, and simultaneous full-pixel readout, allowing even fast-moving subjects to be captured without distortion. The sensor's stacked structure and advanced A/D conversion enable high-speed processing with minimal latency.

BIONZ XR™ Image Processing Engine

With up to eight times greater processing power than previous versions, the BIONZ XR image processing engine minimizes processing latency while significantly increasing image processing power. The large volume of data generated by the newly developed Exmor RS™ image sensor can be processed in real-time, even when shooting continuous bursts at speeds of up to 120fps. This significantly improves image quality, from offering higher color gradation and more realistic color reproduction to reducing image noise. The camera can also record high-quality 14-bit RAW images in all photo shooting modes.

Composite RAW capture reduces noise

The composite RAW capture records multiple images (4, 8, 16, or 32, selectable), which can then be merged using Sony's Imaging Edge Desktop™ computer application software to create full-resolution images with very low noise.7 This makes it possible to photograph wildlife at high shutter speeds or portraits in low light conditions, achieving exceptionally high image quality with low noise, even at higher ISO settings. Additionally, when shooting at low sensitivity levels, the a9 III can take advantage of the camera shake that occurs during handheld shooting and use Composite RAW to create images with reduced false colors and jagged edges.

Advanced 5-axis image stabilization

Shoot handheld with confidence. The a9 III is equipped with a high-precision image stabilization unit, advanced gyroscope sensors, and optimized image stabilization algorithms for effective detection and correction of camera shake, offering 8.0 steps of stabilization. This is further supported by compatible lenses with built-in image stabilization and improved communication between the body and lenses, providing effective control for blur-free shots even at telephoto focal lengths.

Blackout-free shooting

Enjoy uninterrupted viewing through the viewfinder without blackout, even during fast continuous shooting - a game-changer for photographing sports and other fast-moving subjects. Additionally, the annoying time lag typically associated with EVF viewing has been minimized, so you can capture fleeting moments with confidence.

Up to 120 AF/AE tracking calculations per second

Let the camera track - the high-speed readout of the new image sensor allows the α9 III to perform up to 120 AF/AE tracking calculations per second, double that of its predecessor. The AF tracks complex subject movements and predicts sudden movements more accurately than ever, while the AE responds smoothly to sudden changes in brightness. The α9 III continues to track even during continuous shooting, also contributing to greater accuracy.

Don't miss a moment with Pre-Capture

The Pre-Capture function records moments that occurred before the shutter release. It can be set from 0.005 to 1 second and is available in any file format up to 120fps with full AF/AE tracking. This facilitates capturing moments in fractions of a second, such as images of flying birds, even if the actual shutter release is slightly delayed.

Enhance Continuous Shooting Speed

The Continuous Shooting Speed Boost function temporarily increases the shooting speed during burst shooting, ensuring you capture all the action. This is beneficial when photographing sports and other fast-paced activities, where the timing of the crucial moment can be approximately predicted.

Real-time AF Recognition

With the groundbreaking AI processing unit, the a9 III can use object shape data to accurately recognize movement. The human posture estimation technology recognizes not only the eyes but also the position of the body and head with great precision. This makes it possible to lock onto and track a subject that is looking away from the camera or whose face is covered. A distant human subject occupying only a small area of the frame (even smaller than in previous iterations of real-time recognition AF) can be recognized if the subject is near the focus area when the shutter is half-pressed during continuous AF shooting. This can speed up focus acquisition on an athlete approaching from a distance in a track or skiing event, for example.

Reliable recognition of a wider range of subjects

The artificial intelligence processing unit supports enhanced recognition of humans, animals, birds, insects, cars/trains, and airplanes. In the Car/Train category, it is now capable of recognizing helmets, such as those worn by formula racing car drivers. Animal recognition can identify the eyes of certain grazing and small animals, in addition to the eyes, heads, and bodies of dogs, cats, and animals with similar characteristics. Bird recognition has also been updated, making it easier to detect the eyes of various types of birds, as well as recognizing bird bodies. Additionally, the new Animal/Bird setting eliminates the need to switch between two settings for capturing animals or birds.

Wide, fast, accurate autofocus and tracking

The α9 III now features 759 phase detection points in a high-density focal plane phase detection AF system that covers approximately 95.6% of the image area. The large volume of data read from the image sensor is processed at high speed through the advanced BIONZ XR processing engine, while optimized algorithms ensure high accuracy and high density. This fast hybrid AF system combines the speed and tracking performance of phase detection AF with the accuracy of contrast detection AF, reliably locking onto and tracking subjects that move quickly and/or irregularly.

Adjusting AF tracking response to subject movement

Regardless of whether the subject is moving, stationary, or changing speed, AF tracking can follow it. Simply select a [Fixed], [Standard], or [Responsive] setting, depending on the subject's speed and the shooting scenario.

Customizable Focus Area

Keep what you need in focus, with the XL and XS sizes of the focus area added to the lineup. The XS can be useful when photographing wildlife and trying to avoid focusing on branches in the foreground, for example. You can also create a custom focus area with a specified size and even vertical aspect ratio, if necessary. For instance, at a track event where participants are lined up side by side, setting the AF frame to a custom horizontal shape could make it easier to focus on the leading runner.

Flash synchronization at all shutter speeds

With a compatible Sony flash unit (such as the HVL-F60RM or the HVL-F46RM), the a9 III can perform full flash synchronization up to the maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 seconds. This allows the use of flash for additional subject illumination when shooting outdoors in bright daylight with a high shutter speed, reducing the need for large lighting setups and significantly expanding creative shooting possibilities.

Flicker-Free Shooting

The image sensor with a global shutter exposes all pixels simultaneously, so flickering cannot appear within a single image, but it can appear between frames. To reduce this type of flickering, the Anti-flicker Shooting or Hi frequency flicker-free shooting (Var. Shutter) functions can be used.
(1) α9 III (2) Image sensor with rolling shutter

The spherical shutter eliminates the flash band

The advanced image sensor of the a9 III is equipped with a global shutter system that exposes and reads all pixels simultaneously, eliminating exposure differences that may arise, for example, when shooting alongside press photographers covering an event. This eliminates the issue of "flash banding" that is common in cameras using a rolling shutter system.

4K videos without distortion with high resolution and detail

Shoot 4K movies in either full-frame format or Super 35mm format (approximately APS-C). The a9 III records 4K movies (3840 x 2160) at up to 120p and at 60p with full pixel readout and 6K oversampling for dramatically reduced moiré and jaggies.

4K 120p no crop for the first time in a camera

For the first time in Sony's α series, the α9 III offers 4K (3840 x 2160) 120p movie recording without cropping, allowing users to take full advantage of the field of view provided by any lens. For example, 4K footage shot in slow motion at 120p and footage shot at normal speed at 24p within the same scene will have the same field of view and can be easily edited together without the need for reframing.

S-Cinetone™ for cinematic look

Sony's S-Cinetone picture profile provides the same color science that delivers beautiful colors and skin tones across the highly acclaimed Cinema Line series. S-Cinetone produces natural mid-tones that are essential for healthy-looking skin, as well as soft colors and stunning highlights. This allows creators to focus on shooting while achieving a cinematic look without the need for color grading.

Breathing compensation for stable angle of view during focusing

Focus breathing compensation effectively reduces focus breathing when shooting movies. Sony's original Clear Image Zoom technology is used to automatically maintain a constant viewing angle during focus changes for more stable images.

Dynamic Active Mode Stabilization

A high-precision stabilization unit and gyroscope sensors integrated into the camera, along with optimized image stabilization algorithms, allow advanced electronic stabilization to work in conjunction with the 5-axis optical image stabilization system within the camera body in a dynamic active mode that improves stabilization by more than 30% compared to the existing active mode (approximately).

Automatic Frame

Using AI-based subject recognition technology, the auto-framing function automatically crops the frame to keep the subject prominently in focus while shooting movies. Even when the camera is mounted on a tripod, for example, the framing continuously adjusts so that the recorded footage appears as if the subject is being tracked by an experienced camera operator.

Uniquely flexible tilting screen for increased shooting versatility

The α9 III features a 4-axis multi-angle screen that combines the utility of a conventional tilting screen with the flexibility of multi-angle side opening, allowing unlimited adjustment of the shooting angle either vertically or horizontally. Slim, discreet, sturdy, the mechanism allows the screen to move away from the back of the body and tilt up to 98°, down to 40°, and rotate sideways up to 180°. The 3.2-type touch-sensitive LCD screen is optimized for outdoor shooting, providing 2.1 million dot resolution, a wide color gamut, and ample brightness for clear, easy viewing.

New Front Custom Button

An upgrade of Sony's α design, the α9 III features a custom button on the front for faster and easier handling while holding the grip. This makes it even more customizable to different shooting styles and needs. For example, you can assign the Boost continuous shooting speed function to the front button to allow for instant speed boost during burst shooting.

Excellent viewfinder specifications and performance

The OLED viewfinder with approximately 9.44 million dots includes 0.90x23 magnification with a 41° FOV for clear, wide viewing and a renewed structure resulting in a 25 mm24 eyepoint. An original optical design minimizes aberrations that can be distracting when looking around the viewfinder image, providing a more consistent viewing experience. The viewfinder and screen lag time has also been reduced to allow for more stable framing, especially during continuous shooting. The viewfinder frame rate can be set to Standard (60fps), High (120fps), or Higher (240fps)25. The 240fps setting provides an extremely smooth viewfinder image with minimal motion blur when shooting moving subjects and significantly reduces motion blur when panning or tilting.

Two media slots compatible with CFexpress Type A

In addition to UHS-I and UHS-II SD cards, the media slots of the a9 III support CFexpress Type A cards. These are ideal for continuous high-speed shooting at up to 120fps and provide high write speeds that quickly clear the buffers of cameras producing large volumes of photo and movie data. Users can also store data in different media slots depending on file type, image size, and image quality, enhancing workflow.

Optional Vertical Grip VG-C5

The optional vertical grip VG-C5 provides excellent comfort and functionality for long shooting sessions. The grip and shutter button feature the same ergonomic design as the camera body. Access to control is also similar, with an independent front custom button (C5), a front dial, rear dials L and R, and a lock function on the R dial. The vertical grip VG-C5 can accommodate two NP-FZ100 batteries for extended shooting periods.

Durable reliability for demanding environments

The a9 III features exceptional resistance to dust and moisture, thanks to design improvements with silicone rubber sealing around buttons, the lens lock button, the cushion around the lens mount, and other areas. An improved EVF design effectively seals the viewfinder's optical path, achieving the same effect as a dual-glass structure. Combined with dust and moisture-resistant lenses, flash units, and the optional vertical grip VG-C5, the a9 III becomes the core of a dust and moisture-resistant system.

Sturdy and durable

With a lightweight, high-rigidity magnesium alloy for the top cover, front cover, internal frame, and rear cover, the α9 III features great body durability, high shock resistance, and effective heat dissipation. It is built to withstand demanding professional environments while remaining relatively compact and lightweight.

Curtain shading closed when powered off

A shading curtain protects the image sensor from dust and particles when changing lenses. When set to the ON position, it automatically closes when the camera power is turned off.

Ergonomic grip design

The a9 III features a new-shaped grip that enhances handling and reduces user fatigue, even when shooting with heavy telephoto lenses or for extended periods. An ergonomically refined contour ensures that the grip fills the user's hand for a secure hold that does not cause fatigue.

Enhanced Group Imaging

Workflow efficiency is drastically enhanced thanks to image groups. Images captured at speeds of up to 120fps in continuous bursts can be set as "groups," making it easier to locate a specific image within a large group of images. These groups can also be assigned a rating, which can then be used for filtering and searching and is retained after importing the images into an editing application on the computer.

Built-in Wi-Fi for FTP and transfers via smartphone as well as remote PC Remote tethering connection

The built-in Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11ac) with 2x2 MIMO support allows for high-speed data transfer, enabling the a9 III to transfer data up to twice as fast as its predecessor. Communication at 5 GHz offers maximum speed and stability, essential for news and sports photographers who need to deliver immediately, as well as for studio environments. The simple interface within the camera makes it easy to transfer photo and movie data via FTP server, Wi-Fi, fast wired LAN, or USB tethering with a smartphone.
