The most common rule in commercially sold games as Mancala concerns the game Kalah. Mancala is actually an entire family of games. Kalah was invented in 1940 by the American William Champion Jr. He started selling the game in 1944, patented the rules in the 1950s, and founded the Kalah Game Co. in 1958. The game is played on a board with two rows, each row consisting of six round holes. The rows have a large store at each end, called Kalah. A player owns the six holes closest to them and the Kalah on their right. The game starts with four (4) seeds in each hole. A player takes all the seeds from one of their holes and then distributes them one by one, counterclockwise, into the holes and their own Kalah, but not into the opponent's store (Kalah). If the last seed falls into an opponent's hole or a non-empty hole of the player, the move ends without capturing anything. If the last seed falls into the player's Kalah, they must move again.
