Portable digital recorder suitable for any recording. The DR-40 features 2 built-in condenser microphones with variable angle recording (AB and XY recording) and records directly to MP3 or WAV files. It uses SD or SDHC memory cards as storage media (includes a 2GB SD card). It also has a USB port, the ability to be mounted on a microphone stand or tripod, and is powered by 3 alkaline batteries or rechargeable NiMH batteries (AA size).
Specifications are collected from official manufacturer websites. Please verify the specifications before proceeding with your final purchase. If you notice any problem you can report it here.
I had bought the tascam dr40 a while ago. It was used very carefully and not frequently. It must be out of warranty now. Some of the buttons do not respond. They sometimes work after many attempts. Repairing it shouldn't be cost-effective and I am hesitant to buy another tascam despite the company's reputation for sound quality and incredible capabilities for its size, such as the ability to connect 2 external microphones. As I see it, the buttons of all tascam recorders are of the same technology. The only thing that somewhat reassures me is the positive reviews from other users.
I have been using it for years, constantly, for live recordings every week. It has never let me down. Truly the best there is.
Positive characteristics:
1) Dual Mode recording: Backup file storage from -6 to -12db, so in case the recording peaks, we are safe. (I consider this to be its strongest feature compared to the Zoom H4n, as I am sure the recording will not be ruined by peaking)
2) Its internal microphones are amazing! I don't need to say anything more, really.
3) It accepts 3 batteries, which last a long time (unlike the Zoom H4n, which accepts 2 batteries that last a short time).
4) It opens directly, while the Zoom does not (especially if you have a large SD card in the Zoom... you may have to wait for a minute!)
5) Ability to charge via USB (e.g. with a power bank)
6) Better preamps than the Zoom at its price. This is my opinion.
Negative:
It does not have a 3.5mm mini jack input, but it always depends on your needs. Many people do not need it.
Overall, for starters who, for example, want to record a concert (line from the console) or even from the internal microphones, there is no discussion! I have seen it being used in my practical storytelling for documentaries, along with a pop filter, and the Tascam DR 40 for voiceover!
It combines affordable price with good quality. Many features and ease of use!
It is very good and reliable
