Descending into the depths, delving into the underground of Athens, we discover ancient tunnels and passages, lost streams, old shelters, and catacombs.
Can we indeed walk for kilometers beneath the urban surface? The answer is "yes," as long as we know the points that lead to the entrances of the real passages! From these entrances, we either end up in labyrinthine underground corridors, where running waters travel, or in local spaces with tunnels and chambers, such as shelters or catacombs. Thus, the stairs that start beneath an ancient metal cover, at the edge of the road or in the flowerbeds of some sidewalk, can lead us, always with due caution, to a forgotten underground corner of the city!
Very few of these passages are now visible within the urban labyrinth, such as that forgotten oasis in the bustling Center, from where legend has it an underground route to the sea begins...
The experienced Speleologist and Civil Engineer from NTUA, Panagiotis Deuteraios, invites us on an exciting tour of the... Underworld of the capital!
