Death is not pleasant… but at least you make a living.

Mickey7 is an Expendable, a worker on a human mission aimed at colonizing the frozen planet Niflheim.
Every time an extremely dangerous mission arises, the crew turns to Mickey.
When one of his copies is killed, a new one is immediately created, carrying almost intact the memories of the previous one.
After six deaths, Mickey7 finally understands the terms of his contract.

Then, on a routine exploratory expedition, Mickey7 gets lost and is presumed dead.
By the time he manages to return to the colony base, his fate is sealed: the new clone, Mickey8, has already been created and is ready to take on the duties of the Expendable.
Multiple copies are an idea universally abhorrent and, if their existence is discovered, they are sent to the recycler to be turned into protein.
So Mickey7 must keep the existence of his copy a secret from the rest of the colony.

Meanwhile, living conditions on Niflheim are getting worse and worse.
The planet's atmosphere is not suitable for humans, food is insufficient, and the indigenous beings are starting to show curiosity about their new neighbors, which alarms the colony's commander.
Ultimately, the survival of everyone – colonists and natives – ends up depending on Mickey7.
