Sergey Polyakov, the protagonist, uses drugs to escape from reality into the world of dreams, trying to forget both the savagery of the revolution and an unfortunate love that causes him suffering. However, slowly but surely, he is led to death. So the answer is not found there. It is found in the power of writing, in the power of the author to shape the world from scratch and in the creation of indestructible timeless human bonds through the power of art. This short but so dense in meaning narrative seems to have preserved the keys to reading all of Mikhail Bulgakov's work. Behind the apparent simplicity of the myth, we have all the author's favorite themes: the responsibility of man towards the world in which he lives, love, revolution, the mania of destruction, the passion of creation, writing, death, madness, suicide...
