Description

The Philological Club of Thessaloniki, remaining faithful to the plans of creating a new literary school, centered on the realistic depiction of speech and its images, proceeds with the publication of the first volume of short stories titled "…once in Greece". This volume concerns short stories by members revolving around real social events. Events that took place in Greece during the period 1900-1930.

It is the period of the emergence, on the stage of the country's political history, of the modernizing slogans of Eleftherios Venizelos. Amidst military conflicts, both the Balkan Wars and World War I, the country expands its borders. "Greece of the two continents and the five seas" takes shape only to end in the destruction of Smyrna and the uprooting of Hellenism from its ancestral homes in Asia Minor and Pontus.

It is the moment when the early bourgeois class is formed and the still immature characteristics of the working class are shaped. The arrival of refugees and the mixing of cultural realities create new demands in the social fabric.
