H.P. Lovecraft lives on the brink of poverty and deprivation, taking care of his sick aunt, when he receives a letter from the editor-in-chief of an "eccentric" small-circulation subscription magazine asking him to write a story for a substantial fee.
Lovecraft, in need of the money, agrees.
