“When I was researching Fall of Giants, I was amazed to realize that World War I was a war that nobody wanted. No European leader on either side intended for it to happen. I concluded that it was all a tragic accident. And I wondered: Could the same thing happen again? And then I asked myself the question, could I write a story about it? In my story, what would be the equivalent of the assassination that triggered World War I?
