Description

Scandinavia is a relatively small and sparsely populated region on the northern edge of Europe. For centuries, and until relatively recently, the Scandinavian countries were plagued by poverty and mass emigration abroad. However, since the mid-20th century, Scandinavia has been a subject of global admiration.

International interest is mainly focused on the famous Scandinavian model, as it is expressed in the fields of politics, economy, social welfare, and international relations. The Scandinavian model is today synonymous with economic efficiency, political consensus, and social solidarity, under the guarantee and close guidance of the state. The success of the model has led all five Scandinavian countries - Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland - to achieve a very high standard of living, in conditions of widespread social peace.

Despite its success, the Scandinavian model is currently under pressure from globalization, demographic aging, and immigration. Many believe it is destined to decline. However, for many, the flexibility it has shown so far is a guarantee for the future - and this, thanks to the unique Scandinavian combination of idealism and practical spirit. This book studies the main characteristics of the Scandinavian model and how they have evolved over the past fifty years, while also examining its future prospects.
