Can the Left pull Greece out of the dark tunnel of economic disaster and national degradation, where the memorandum governments led it?

This is the central question that Petros Papakonstantinou discusses in his new book. He rejects the orthodox interpretation of the crisis, which blames all the responsibilities on the "wasteful state" and the "lazy Greeks," as well as the Keynesian interpretations, which only blame the golden boys and the "casino capitalism." He argues that the Greek tragedy is the local expression of a historical crisis of global capitalism. He estimates that from the perspective of the system, there is no smooth, peaceful way out of the long recession, but only the "solution" of ruthless class war and authoritarian states of emergency. He proposes the construction of a unified labor front, with the catalytic contribution of all the fighting forces of the Left, in order to make a popular, democratic overthrow possible, on the path towards socialist transformation. He believes that the strategic and programmatic rearmament of the Left is urgent, before the window of historical opportunity opened by the crisis closes - perhaps for decades.
