 A few weeks after his marriage to a beautiful young widow, Gordon Cloade meets a tragic end during an air raid in London.

Overnight, the former Mrs. Underhay becomes the sole heir to the Cloade family fortune. It doesn't take long before Hercule Poirot is visited by Mrs. Cloade, the wife of the deceased's brother, who claims that the spirits warned her that Mrs. Underhay's first husband is still alive. 

Poirot is skeptical of her request to find Mr. Underhay guided only by the spirits. However, what troubles him more is the true motive of the woman who approached him.
