Description

Can we shape our life into a bios? In the history of philosophy, the distinction between life and bios was often ignored or misinterpreted, while at the same time it served to conceal the importance of the body in politics. As a result, there was a negative view of the body due to its connection with life, i.e. the material conditions of bios and necessity. In addition, the official assumptions of political philosophy silently presuppose a hierarchy of bodily senses, with vision being the highest. This study discusses the shaping of life into bios as a political problem, with reference to the relationship between the public and private sphere and the functioning of the body within it. Specifically, it explores which sense prevailed in which sphere and with what consequences, as well as the importance of self-care for self-governance within power relations. Finally, it examines how irony as a politics of bios contributes to the self-creation of the subject and the establishment of a democratic society.
