Description

Professional redesigned mirrorless

Whatever you photograph, however you photograph it, the EOS R5 will allow you to be creative in ways that were not possible until now. Capture stunning 45-megapixel photos at up to 20 frames per second* or cinematic 12-bit 8K RAW video using the full width of the camera's sensor. The advanced AF system is programmed using specialized deep learning AI technology, while the built-in image stabilization system works in tandem with the lens's stabilization system to provide up to 8 stops* of protection against camera shake.

See Unprecedented Details

A next-generation full-frame CMOS sensor, with a resolution of 45 megapixels, captures images with incredible sharpness, low noise, and a wide dynamic range: the ideal partner for advanced RF lenses.

Full-frame CMOS sensor, 45 megapixels, and DIGIC X processor

For exciting clarity and detail no matter what you photograph – even in low light conditions, thanks to ISO 51,200.

Introducing Portrait Relighting and Background Clarity Features

Use the Dual Pixel RAW format to adjust the lighting on your subjects' faces or to increase the clarity level of just the background when shooting landscapes.

Clarity and accurate focus every moment

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology offers lightning-fast focusing and features 5,940 selectable AF positions, covering practically 100% of the frame.

Revolutionary Smart AF

The camera's autofocus is programmed using specialized deep learning artificial intelligence technology, which was first developed for the revolutionary EOS-1D X Mark III. Thus, the EOS R5 can recognize and track a subject's face and eyes with new levels of precision, even when the subject is in profile. This tracking capability is also available when photographing dogs, cats, and birds, so these subjects remain in perfect focus as they move – for the first time in EOS cameras.

Absolute speed, absolute quality.

Performance that changes the rules of the game and elevates your creativity to new levels.

No other camera comes close to the EOS R5. Capture full-frame 45-megapixel images at an amazing 20fps, completely silently and with fully automatic focus tracking. Additionally, when needed, the camera also features a mechanical shutter, allowing top shooting speeds of up to 12fps.

New standards for filmmakers... from the beginning

As a pioneer in DSLR video recording and creator of the renowned Cinema EOS series of cameras and lenses, Canon has been able to integrate amazing cinematic capabilities into the EOS R5 from a privileged position. Capture stunning 12bit RAW video internally at 8K or record 4K (4:2:2 10bit) footage at frame rates up to 120p for exceptional slow-motion effects. And all this using the full width of the camera's full-frame sensor for a truly cinematic experience. Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology with Face/Eye Detection ensures image sharpness and allows for impressive pull-focus transitions in all video shooting situations.

Advanced wireless communication that will transform the way you work

The EOS R5 features a permanently active low-energy Bluetooth connection, so it is always in communication with a smart device. Simply launch the Canon Camera Connect app and the camera will establish a quick Wi-Fi connection that allows photographers to review, control, and transfer images, as well as shoot remotely.

I have had the camera for about 10 months. The Autofocus is really good and the image quality is fantastic. I have used it with both RF lenses and Canon and Tamron EF lenses, and it works perfectly with all of them (note that the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G1 does not use VC when used with the adapter). The RF lenses are top-notch but come with a high cost.

As for video, the image is also excellent and there are no issues with overheating (updated firmware). In Italy, with temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius this year, and shooting in 4K HQ with the camera exposed to the sun for hours, it did not have any problems.

The only negative thing I have to mention about video is the appearance of the "jello effect," especially when using a wide-angle lens without stabilization due to the IBIS. To address this, besides being careful during shooting, Premiere does an amazing job of either eliminating or greatly reducing it with the wrap stabilizer at around 5-12%.

For hobbyists, however, there is no need to go for the R5. The R6/R6 ii is also a very good choice.

You will hear many positive things on YouTube, but I want to emphasize the negatives that make it an expensive tool that unfortunately cannot get the job done. Impeccable hybrid camera, very good quality in everything, amazing autofocus with very good eye detection, you don't miss a moment even with a telephoto lens. I have been a Canon user with 5d mk2 - mk4, eos r, and I made the purchase for mainly photography but also for video. It is unacceptable to overheat to the point where it doesn't let you record. After about 200-300 clicks, it starts giving you the temperature warning. It also drains the battery compared to the R. With the 15-35RF, the ibis causes a lot of jelly effect at 15-22 mm. Mainly used for weddings and baptisms, as soon as it shows the overheating sign, you can't record 4k 60, not even 1080-4k 120. Yes, it records 1080 60, but if that was the case, we should have kept the Eos R, which has never let us down and is 3000 cheaper. To put it simply, imagine your camera shutting down during a wedding because it overheated. PS: Until October 23 with the latest update, it still has temperature issues. I won't even discuss it for July and August when Greece reaches temperatures of 40 degrees

I bought it for 4,000 euros and I consider it a very good deal.

To understand my profile, I am the owner of an 80D and GH5 with a variety of Canon EF, Sigma, and Tokina lenses. In the photo, the R5 shows the difference from these two cameras from the first click.

I have recorded several videos and have not encountered any problems (I mention this more for the overheating issue that many people are afraid of). The truth is that before I did the firmware update, it deleted some random files that I shot in 25fps ALL-i FHD 0kb. This bug was fixed by downloading the files to the PC using the Canon utility software (Adobe Bridge or the SD folder showed the files as 0kb). It has not occurred since the firmware update.

In handheld shots (tilt, pans, etc.), it seems to have the same good stabilization as the GH5. So, in combination with the good autofocus (which is practically non-existent in the GH5), it has become my primary choice for video.

I have not purchased an RF lens and I use it with the EF lenses and the RING adapter, which greatly enhances the user experience (spend the extra 100 euros, you will remember me).

In terms of user experience, the camera is a poem. It's as if a photographer made it to be as smart as possible. It is also as customizable as you want and dream of.

For now, I am very excited about the purchase and I see everything in a positive light (OK, the bug with the 0kb files is not justified for such a camera, but these things happen). If I find anything negative or if something else happens, I will update the description.

    July 2021 Update:
An exceptional machine, it has upgraded all my projects and my user experience as a professional. I will write down the negatives that I hardly found in any review and may not suit everyone:

    - To export videos correctly, you need the Canon utility despite the firmware updates. It doesn't bother me that much, except in cases where, for example, you shoot a wedding on behalf of a collaborator, you can't just give them the card and leave, you have to carry a laptop as well (Canon, if you're reading this, it's embarrassing).
    - Although "Gerald Undone" mentioned it in the reviews, the file sizes of the videos in 4K and above are ridiculously large. I don't know how it was with the 5D to help you, but you definitely need very fast SD cards. Compared to the GH5 that I have, which records 4K 50FPS on a 128GB 94/mbs card, the R5 doesn't even allow you to start recording in 4K 25fps "light mode".
    - Don't complain that it doesn't record on two cards simultaneously, all the reviews mention it. Use an external recorder.

These are the only downsides that I believe will bother a professional. Happy shopping!

    November Update:
    - No new downsides.
    - The firmware completely fixed the 0kb files.
    - Battery with endless battery life.
    - Charging with USB-C directly on the camera is a dream.
    - The compatibility with EF lenses is excellent

I have had it since early September. Obviously, it is the best thing I have used so far in a camera. In combination with the RF15-35, 28-70, 70-200 lenses, it is the perfect tool for any photographer. I can't find anything negative to say except for the slightly increased weight and the overheating issue in videos. It's worth upgrading even from the 5Dmkiv.
Update 3 years later: The overheating issues have been fully resolved for a year now, and now you can shoot unlimited 8K and 4K 60p, with the only drawback still being the 29:59 per clip limit. We hope this will change with the latest updates before the MK2 comes out.
I have covered countless weddings so far, without any problems. I noticed that when I attach the grip, I have battery life equal to 3 single batteries (without the grip). With a power bank over 30w and PD, I have countless hours of autonomy and I can shoot all day without changing the battery, and the Pb is still at 30%.
The autofocus is good, but the second generation is now noticeably better. It recognizes faces, eyes, animals, vehicles. I use the control ring of the lenses for focus area selection. The R6ii is a worthy competitor and the extra screen is not so necessary. If you can find it for up to €3000, it is still worth it today, after 3 years.
