Description

The British passenger ocean liner Titanic (RMS Titanic) sank in the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912, after colliding with an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The collision occurred at 11:40 pm on April 14, southeast of Newfoundland. Despite efforts, the inevitable happened as the ship was traveling at maximum speed to arrive in New York earlier than expected. The iceberg tore through the hull starting from the bow, destroying all five compartments and allowing water to flood in. The ship was designed to stay afloat even with four compartments flooded, but not five. It sank two hours and forty minutes later, at 2:20 am. Two minutes before sinking, the hull broke in two, as it was sinking bow-first and the stern was rising, causing the stern to detach due to the weight of water in the bow. It claimed the lives of approximately 1,500 people, while the remaining 700 witnessed the tragedy from lifeboats. The survivors were rescued by the ship Carpathia, which arrived at the scene at 3:30 am.
