Miss Kate Dalton does not believe in fairy tales and certainly does not believe that every story has a happy ending. She has learned very well that life is not rainbows and sunshine.

Her stepmother forces her to attend a ball. There she unexpectedly meets a prince who is not considered very charming. Inevitably, they clash, a clash that brings them closer together. Despite their peculiar attraction, it is obvious that their relationship leads nowhere: Prince Gabriel is committed to another woman, who happens to be a princess, but also the means to fulfill his excessive ambitions.

Gabriel likes his official fiancée, but he does not love her. And he should spend more time with her than with Miss Kate Dalton, who is beautiful but does not have financial resources.

As everything seems, this is indeed a fairy tale where they will not live happily ever after. Unless... something changes exactly at the twelfth stroke of midnight.
