Ten years after its first edition, the Glossary of Nikos Kavvadias' work is reissued with significant changes. Its material has greatly increased, as a large number of new entries have been added to all its sections. Many entries have been corrected and even more have been supplemented or improved. The interpretations of most entries have been rewritten to make them simpler and more comprehensible to the reader who does not have specialized knowledge, and generally, emphasis has been placed on highlighting useful information. Finally, new sections with categorized entries have been added.
The Glossary consists of five sections. The first, the Vocabulary, includes words and phrases derived from the popular maritime language, from Greek dialects, from foreign languages, or well-known words used with a particular meaning. The second section includes foreign words and phrases found in the texts written in Latin characters. The third section includes the names of persons mentioned in the works of Nikos Kavvadias. The fourth section could be called Toponymic. It includes Greek and foreign toponyms with brief information about each. The fifth section includes references to titles of works (literary, visual arts), newspapers and magazines, commercial product names (e.g., drinks, cigarettes, medicines, etc.), names of ships and shipowners, and names of animals.
From the structure and contents of the book, as outlined above, it becomes clear that this work goes beyond the limits of a simple glossary; in this case, it tends to become, if it is not already, a linguistic and, to a large extent, interpretive guide to the entirety of Nikos Kavvadias' work. However, such works are obviously not only addressed to the reader who has such linguistic queries; they serve the scholar of Kavvadias' work, the scholar of literary language, the modern Greek studies scholar in general, the folklorist, the historian of contemporary commercial shipping, or modern history. It will provide particular satisfaction to the specialist studying literary interactions, as, as far as we know, for the first time in this Glossary, the identity of certain verses from foreign works or the creator and the collection from which they originate are mentioned. The same applies to those dealing with Kavvadias' relationship with the aesthetic theories and artistic movements of his time, as they can now have all the artistic works he mentions, their creators, and some useful notes gathered together.
This Glossary is a useful aid to researchers of modern Greek literature and the modern Greek language.
