Description

Upgrading a prized zoom, the Canon EF-mount atx-i 11-16mm f/2.8 CF from Tokina is a versatile ultra-wide zoom that is ideal for landscape, architecture, and interior photography. It is characterized by the bright f/2.8 aperture, which maintains consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and benefits working in available lighting.

The optical design incorporates a series of aspherical and low-dispersion elements that limit a variety of aberrations for improved sharpness. Individual elements are also multi-coated to resist flare and ghosting, providing better contrast and accurate colors when working in bright or backlit conditions.

  • Ultra-wide prime designed for Canon EF-mount APS-C cameras, providing a 17.6-25.6mm equivalent focal length range.
  • Bright constant f/2.8 aperture offers consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and improves depth of field control.
  • Two aspherical elements, including one large-diameter element, help control spherical aberrations and distortions for sharper and more accurate rendering.
  • Two SD low-dispersion elements control chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for greater clarity and color accuracy.
  • Multi-coated elements limit flare and ghosting for better contrast and color accuracy in bright lighting conditions.
  • The autofocus system uses an internal focusing design for quick and responsive performance.
  • One-Touch Focus Clutch mechanism allows for quick switching between autofocus and manual focus settings by pushing or pulling the focus ring.

This review is about the mount: Nikon F

The lens is very decent. It is a relatively cheap lens, with corresponding material quality. One cannot expect to get an ultra-wide zoom lens with a fixed aperture of 2.8 and its plastic parts to be as expensive lenses for 500€.

It is not silent in any case. Especially in Live View, it takes time to focus and makes noise. It is not a problem for me, as I do not use LV in photography and in video, either I focus before I start or I work with manual focus.

The lens on the D500 viewfinder is fast. It required "AF Fine Tune". "Interestingly", there was enough deviation which is not a big deal though, as it is now corrected through the camera.

Its aspherical elements are really remarkable and significantly reduce distortions.

The two reasons I did not go for the 11-20 are, on the one hand, that I already have ND filters, etc. in 77mm and did not want to go through the process of changing them to 82mm. And on the other hand, in wide-angle lenses, I always aim for the smallest possible zoom to avoid problems with sharpness. Of course, I'm not saying that the 11-20 is not sharp, as I have not tried it. But this was one of my criteria for buying the 11-16 and is based on experience from other lenses. At this stage, because the difference is small, it may not even apply, but I was not interested in going beyond 16mm for the use I make of it.

The lens is quite sharp at the edges (at least compared to what I expected). Do not expect perfect results. Here, you get what you pay for. You compromise with some things. You do some work on the processing if needed and you're good.

The weight does not particularly concern me, but whoever is interested should know that after a while of use, they will "feel" it. However, Ok! It has so many crystals inside. Let's not want everything to be ours.

The MF/AF setting through the focus ring did not surprise me. You need to deal with it a little more each time because it may not "lock" well and it generally seems very sensitive. I don't know if it really is (and I probably wouldn't want to know).

Both the zoom ring and the focus ring are quite smooth compared to my Nikon lenses and I liked it. Especially in video, I am satisfied.

I hope the above will help you make the right decisions.
