The theme of "Beren and Lúthien" seems simple: the desperate love between two young people. However, in the hands of J.R.R. Tolkien, the love story of the mortal Beren and the immortal Lúthien transforms into a breathtaking myth. Lúthien's father, the Elven king, who opposes her relationship with Beren, assigns her beloved an extremely difficult task. If he manages to complete it, then he will be able to marry her. The thrilling adventures of the two heroes will lead them to the northwest of Middle-earth, to the vast fortress of Angband, the Iron Hell, and will bring them face to face with the embodiment of evil: the terrible Morgoth.

The story "Beren and Lúthien" was written by Tolkien in 1917 and remained unpublished until very recently. It is an important new chapter in the history of Middle-earth, which dialogues with The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, and the other narratives built with incomparable craftsmanship by the unparalleled Tolkien.

Reviews

  • Very nice story, awesome book although at some point it got a bit tiring with the variations of the story that seem like repetition even with changes. Nice story, a bit of a love story type with adventure.

Another book in the Lord of the Rings series, edited by Tolkien's son. This book is a romantic adventure, without changing the style compared to the other books in the series. What makes the book a bit difficult to read is that it was not completed from beginning to end by Tolkien himself, resulting in Christopher, his son, taking multiple versions of the same text and trying to put them in order. Each chapter is a different version of the text, with a different beginning and end (since the whole story was not written anywhere as I said) and has commentary by Christopher, trying to show us the differences and highlight the most important points.

For example, some differences are as follows:
    1) Changes in character names
    2) Change of species (Elf/Human) for some heroes and/or their descendants
    3) Changes in battle details, with the same outcome
    4) Appearance and disappearance of characters that strongly influenced the story

I believe that although it is a very nice book, it is mainly aimed at people who want to expand the world of the Lord of the Rings.
