Description

Epigraphic is a science of archaeology that studies all kinds of Greek inscriptions written on stone. Along with Numismatics, they are the direct sources for documenting and understanding History. The handbook of the Cambridge University professor Arthur Geoffrey Woodhead (1922 - 2008), the most renowned in the English language, introduces us to the magical and peculiar world of Epigraphy. The main virtues of the handbook are that it succinctly and completely guides the student, as well as anyone interested in archaeology, through the various aspects of Epigraphy: editorial symbols, origin and evolution of the Greek alphabet, writing methods, classification, dating and study of inscriptions, prints and photographs, inscriptions as monuments of art, bibliography, as well as numerical systems, calendars, etc. Although the handbook was reissued in 1981 (first edition in 1959), it has not lost its value since then. The Greek translation informs about the latest developments in Epigraphy since then, while the bibliographic update includes the period 1981-2009. This particular edition aims to fill an important gap in Greek literature by providing the foundations for approaching Greek inscriptions.
