Description

Dimitris Manikas, professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, is mainly concerned with public architecture, especially in Vienna.

His works often require strong solutions, as they usually involve extensions, restorations, or the implementation of new functions in old structures, sometimes the works of famous architects from the past. He exhausts every possibility of processing the small scale and applies his own idiom of "clarity and transparency".

Manikas has participated in several important competitions for buildings in Athens, such as the Cultural Center (1977), the Acropolis Museum, the expansion of the School of Fine Arts, and the formation of the metropolitan park in Elliniko. He has also received a first prize for Syntagma Square (1999). His general approach takes into account the historicity of the space and the peculiarities of the urban landscape (low heights, intense light, fragmentary building scale, need for greenery and recreational spaces), while his beloved "poetics of the minimum" is the appropriate choice for this specific built environment.
