Description

The diary of Palmétta Armellino was found hidden in an old chest. It depicts a different world of the Mediterranean in the early 20th century, the image of a life parallel but also intertwined with shocking events that overturned the course of the world until then. Today, the diary is presented in the book along with its historical context.

A woman who listened to three names: her baptismal name, Palmétta. In Hellenized form, Vaya, and in the name chosen by her hopelessly in love husband: Bella. A cosmopolitan woman who lived from Cairo to Messina in Sicily and from Damascus and Aleppo in Syria to Edessa. A feminist who fought for women's rights and led the way for women's suffrage. Romantic and dynamic, she not only lived a fairytale marriage, but from her childhood she knew the power of love as her Italian father chose to renounce his noble title and wealthy family inheritance to marry the woman of his heart from the Ionian Islands. Unique, though never seeking a leading role, Palmétta Armellino reveals her personality through her forgotten diary found in a trunk. And through the events of her life and her thoughts, the turbulent period of the early 20th century is also depicted, thanks to the pen of her granddaughter, a distinguished historian of architecture, Evangelia Chatzitrifonos.
