Description

"Sergios and Vakchos" (1959), a historical novel or rather a novelistic chronicle, draws its plot from Byzantium, but narrates in its entirety, sometimes seriously and sometimes in a humorous way, fourteen centuries of the life of Hellenism, from 250 AD to 1948. Saints Sergios and Vakchos do not live in the bliss of Paradise, but on the contrary, from the magnificent temple built in their honor by Justinian, they watch with vigilant eyes the course of Romiosyne and the entire Ecumene, discuss it, comment on it, and judge it. Meanwhile, the reader is delighted and amused. This novel is unique in Karagatsis' work, not only because there is no other that draws inspiration from Byzantium - except for the story "Christmas of 1448 AD" - but also because there are two versions of it: the extensive one in two volumes, and the shorter one which had a slightly different title: "The marvelous story of saints Sergios and Vakchos".
