It is the first installment of the Dark Pictures anthology that I have engaged with, and the impressions it left me with are quite good.
Firstly, I must say that it reminded me a lot of Heavy Rain in terms of gameplay style, visuals, etc. - although it doesn't have the depth in gameplay or the dramatic story that Heavy Rain had. I haven't had the chance to play Until Dawn, so I can't identify any similarities or differences.
The graphics are very beautiful and detailed (at least on PlayStation 5), and the atmosphere is quite horror-inducing. The only thing that slightly disappointed me is the lack of creative gameplay - it could have easily included puzzles or riddles, etc. Other than that, it feels like watching a horror movie unfold with various heroes and characters, choosing their dialogues and actions. The characters are very interesting, but of course, clichés are not absent in the storyline.
Nevertheless, it kept me in front of the screen for many hours due to its atmosphere and plot, and for that, I commend it. The game is not long, and I think anyone can finish it in a few days by following the plot.
Overall, I can say that it left me with a very good impression due to its graphics and atmosphere, and I will definitely try the rest of The Dark Pictures series. If you enjoy horror adventures, you should probably give it a look. I must mention, however, that in my opinion, its price should not exceed 15 euros due to its short duration.
A mediocre game to pass the time. It doesn't compare in quality to Until Dawn or Quarry. It's short, around four hours, so I wouldn't recommend it for the price.
Most tend to compare this game to "Until Dawn", which is expected on one hand, as both were created by the same company and have a similar theme, but strange on the other hand, as we are talking about two different games, with completely different atmospheres, and the first one definitely surpasses the second one.
The story, since in this category of games you play as the first and last role, although without any particular twists, proves to be captivating, it engrosses you and truly creates a genuine feeling of suspense and curiosity about what will happen next. I wouldn't call it "scary", but there are some jump scares that can really make you jump. In contrast to "Until Dawn", where the story was rather drawn out and included a lot of unnecessary conversations and actions, here the plot is more tightly woven and the action takes place quickly.
The graphics are truly exceptional, detailed, the expressions of the characters as well as the details of the eerie ship's surroundings are rendered with enviable accuracy, you truly feel like you're watching a movie. It goes without saying (since comparisons are... inevitable) that they are superior to "Until Dawn" in any case. The same applies to the excellent sound, which harmonizes perfectly with what happens on the screen.
The problematic point lies in the controls. Sometimes you feel like the characters don't obey your commands and you will find yourself, many times, getting frustrated when the hero doesn't turn easily or refuses to execute what you press in a timely manner. The same issue existed in "Until Dawn", although to a lesser extent, I think.
Many complain about the short duration of the story and, in many ways, rightfully so, it could definitely be longer. 4 hours are enough to finish it, which is why it is recommended to approach it as if you are watching a movie that you simply direct, rather than as a game. Nevertheless, the story unfolds so tightly and captivatingly (for the most part, at least) that it is somewhat justified. Of course, you can replay it several times to see the alternative endings, make different decisions that will lead to different outcomes, or to earn the corresponding trophies.
Overall, it is a highly interesting game that fans of the genre will love and definitely want to play the next one immediately. Those accustomed to other types, more action-oriented games, may, obviously, get bored and feel that it doesn't concern them. In any case, whether you liked or disliked "Until Dawn", it is worth investing your time and money, knowing that you will experience another, even better (although shorter) experience that will stay with you.
Unbelievable disappointment.. Having played Until Dawn, which I really liked, I was expecting something similar if not better, since it's from the same creators. Unfortunately, it falls short in every aspect by a lot! Even in graphics, although it is very good in that too. In everything else, it is much inferior! Poor player handling, poor characters, poor dialogues. And the worst part, a promising storyline that ends in 3 hours (Until Dawn was around 12) without even starting properly. Confusing, without twists, and leaves essential things unanswered! I will get Little Hope having a "little hope" that they will fix many things and have more inspiration like they did with Until Dawn.. If you enjoy games of this genre, I would only recommend it for the graphics, sound, and atmosphere, but considering that it has nothing to do with Until Dawn and if you find it for under 10 euros!
First of all, for those who complain about its short duration, I remind you that the title literally says "Anthology". The whole concept of The Dark Pictures series is short horror stories.
As for the gameplay, it was a bit slow at times, and just when it started to build some suspense, it would cut to another scene. Of course, it makes sense because essentially the game tries to make you understand that not everything is as it seems and makes you think whether the entities you see are truly supernatural or something completely different. However, I believe they could have improved it so that you can still connect the events happening without losing the suspense.
Lastly, no, it's not Until Dawn, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It has many branching paths considering its short length. I believe it maintains the interest and it's worth replaying a few times. If you liked the gameplay style of Until Dawn, it's worth a try, especially at this price. However, don't expect the same game because it simply isn't.
Good little game for those who like thrillers, it doesn't have any amazing storyline and it's not something that someone experienced in thrillers hasn't seen before. Also, it has a relatively short duration and can easily be finished in one day. Of course, you can replay it to see the other endings of the game. However, it's not a game that will keep you occupied for a long time. It's inferior to the same company's "Until Dawn" and shorter in duration. For me, who bought it a few months ago for 30 euros, it wasn't worth it. But for the 15-20 euros it costs now, it's fine. I hope the next game in the "The Dark Pictures" series will be better.
Quite below average. Really no comparison to Until Dawn. Incredibly clumsy and boring. Bad dialogues, bad choices that didn't make much sense in several points, indifferent story that, even though it gets you excited in the end, ends up not touching you at all, most endings incredibly clumsy, overall very bad. The multiplayer is also a very bad experience, as you basically played in rounds.
A very good game. It is wrong for those who bought it expecting something like Until Dawn and criticize it because it is a different game. Because it has the same concept, do not expect the same game, play Until Dawn again if that's the case. I agree that it has a short duration and could cost less. As for the story, it explains EVERYTHING perfectly as long as you read what you find and connect the dots. If you do that, you understand what's happening and you can save ALL the characters. It's all in the details, just pay attention to them. It is a game with quick-time events and story, NOT action. Read before you buy it and don't criticize something that wasn't there from the beginning!
Regarding me, I quite liked the graphics very much. Even better. I believe it is better than Detroit. The reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it is short in duration. Otherwise, the story was very nice and at times quite scary
If there was a -1, I would give it. It is impossible for the same company that made Until Dawn, which was fantastic, to have made this abomination. Basically, it's not a game but a DEMO. The single player doesn't even last 6 hours. Non-existent story, scenes that don't make sense, disjointed, incoherent. I'll give it away and even pay someone to take it.
Unacceptable. As a big fan of Until Dawn, I was expecting something similar but no. Boring, uninteresting, bad handling, bad performances, mediocre storyline. Only the graphics are good, but otherwise, it's a black carpet. Too short, doesn't explain anything, a storyline that seems like it was written in a day. Disappointing.
Nice idea but implementation is very cheap, meaning that the game has nothing to offer you. You just walk and that's it. Static in everything. You wait and wait for something to happen but in the end, it's just boring, boring, boring
Nice game unfortunately short in duration. Play it with a headset, it's a better experience. I liked it in single play but in movie night, the group got a bit bored after 30-40 minutes because they had to wait a long time for their turn.
Personally, I like this kind of choice-based games and I was not disappointed.
Try to buy it on sale because it's not worth more than 15€.
***Now it's on sale for 19.99€ on the ps store***
Awesome game, incredible story, atmospheric, dark, and full of terror. It's for fans of games like Until Dawn, Heavy Rain, etc.
The first time you play it, it will leave an unforgettable impression on you, with amazing details and mind-blowing sound, you never know where it will come from.
The downside is that it has a short duration, no matter how many times you play it, no matter how many choices and changes you make, no matter how hard you try to keep them all alive to have a full story...
It follows exactly the same steps as its predecessor, namely Until Dawn, and has almost the same positives and negatives as the previous gaming title. Among its positives, the well-crafted storyline, the stunning graphics and sound effects, as well as the countless jumpscares. As for the negatives, I could mention that some quick-time events are quite fast, resulting in the player making more mistakes compared to other titles in the same category. The control of the players has also not improved, as sometimes the movement that the user wants to make is delayed in the game. Lastly, it is short, as its duration is about half of Until Dawn. A step-by-step personal walkthrough can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpVB0dw2iJs
The game had many issues with the buttons it asked you to press, many times you would press them and it would register incorrectly, and the time it gave you was minimal, resulting in unfairly losing the gameplay. It also felt small and although the story was interesting, your decisions were limited. If you are going to get something, prefer the same company's Until Dawn, it is much better!
If you like the style of these games with decisions and quick time events, you just go and get it. It could cost 25 since it is short in duration, but anyway. It creates a nice atmosphere, a cliché storyline but you still have a great time, especially if you play it with friends on a couch with snacks and drinks around. I finished it in one go in 4 and something hours with fun in between, and it can easily be replayed for an alternative ending. I didn't find the controls so satisfying in some parts, but all these games have this issue. I would like fewer forced jumpscares, but still, it adds to the American feel on your skin. Overall, I had fun and I believe it wouldn't be strange to see it on ps plus next September or October.
Very good, powerful game but you finish it in three hours. They included many different "endings" but made it short. It is half compared to Until Dawn.
