The TD-W8961N does the job of multiple networking devices packed into one sleek device. It is better than the compatible ones provided by the companies. The forthnet zte I had gave a speed of 6 mbps while this one gives 7 mbps. The only downside is that it doesn't have dual band
Replaced old 2017 tplink and improved the situation. It doesn't disconnect and it increased the speed to expected levels. I installed it with a laptop, which worries you a little when you have to choose certain things, but it's not difficult. Let's see how many years it will last, for now, 5/5 and it provides good coverage, we can even play from another floor with 11mbps.
My comment is about the TP-LINK TD-W8961N v4 because I see that there are many versions. I bought it a few days ago for €22, which I consider to be a very good price. I have a 24Mbps Vodafone connection. When I made all the connections and set it up, it didn't synchronize automatically, but it required manual settings through the router's website. The provider doesn't have access to it and told me that I had to make the settings myself. After a lot of searching, I found the settings I needed to make and it connected to the internet properly. Until today, after 5 days, it hasn't disconnected and the speed is stable. Judging by my previous router that the provider gave me, a ZTE, this Tp-link is much better. It has a greater Wi-Fi range and in general, I see that web pages load faster on the internet on my desktop computer [with an Ethernet cable connection]. The future will ultimately determine if it's worth it, but so far, from what I've seen, it performs very well.
It was installed on a NOVA ADSL 24mbps line (let's say). It replaced the provider's equipment and slightly improved the speed, almost eliminating disconnections. It's not something crazy, but it fully met my expectations
I bought it because I wanted something better than the Zyxel that Wind had given me. But I don't see any better performance or stability. Especially with the WiFi, I have connectivity issues at times and it requires restarting the WiFi or even the router to stabilize. Some basic functions are also missing (e.g. periodic restart) that I would expect from a brand like this. I also had a bad experience with their USB 3.0 hub recently. I won't buy their products again unless I hear that they have regained the quality of their products on which they built their brand.
I had purchased it (v4) in February 2021, for the first 2 months until a new firmware update was released, it constantly had disconnections. I had increased the SNR (there is the possibility through command line) and it was more stable but I was losing in download speed. After the new firmware update that came out in April 2021, everything was fixed and it became stable without any disconnections, and I had full download speed.
In 2 years and 2 months, it started rebooting on its own several times a day, so I threw it away and replaced it again with the same one (v4). The new one came with the latest firmware update and it works correctly without any disconnections.
The reasons why I chose it again are:
- Its price
- It is compatible with the Lamtech MINI DC UPS 15W, it has a 9V input, so that the internet does not go out during a power outage
- Soon there will be a switch to VDSL, I wanted something economical temporarily to do my work without any issues
It worked fine for 2 years. Now it restarts 3 times a day and goes back to default settings on its own... obviously garbage
Awesome! It has been working non-stop for 4 months and it hasn't fallen even for a minute! I have a Smart TV and 5 other Smart devices on it + laptop and it doesn't slow down! The other phone provider sucks, and I realized what I've been missing all this time! It's worth it and more!
It saved me! I had a Xiaomi router that I was using as an extender. With the modem-router provided by Forthnet-Nova, I had terrible problems every time I connected it. Every time I activated the Xiaomi, it would work for up to 5 hours, but then it would lose connection with the modem-router and wouldn't reconnect without restarting. Since I installed the Tp-Link, it hasn't shut down even once for almost a week! Also, the signal strength is much better compared to what Forthnet-Nova provides. Be careful when purchasing for your type of connection. ADSL and VDSL modems are not interchangeable.
Strong signal throughout almost the entire 100 sqm house. Sometimes it gets stuck and requires a reboot, easy installation
Frequent disconnections, very poor signal when there is a wall in between. Finally, I will get rid of it. Of course, I ordered one from another company. Before throwing it away, I will break it to enjoy it
It started functioning normally, but after a few months it has been causing disruptions during restarts, especially when I am doing online classes, watching live streaming, or playing online games.
The company checked the line and a technician came to my house to investigate. They increased the SNR to 16, but still the same issues.
In the end, I switched back to my old router and no more restarts.
There are too many disconnections that I didn't have before with my provider's router, I couldn't find any firmware to update for the money it's good but I believe that for something good you have to pay something extra!!!
After some adjustments by forthnet recently (speed increased) compared to an old technicolor router, it went from 10 to 14 mbps, which I didn't expect. Otherwise, it's been working fine so far, except that sometimes it can freeze if more than 5 devices are connected
With this specific router, I encountered a problem with the proper functioning of my mobile phone (Xiaomi Redmi Note 5) with Vodafone's network. Specifically, my mobile phone was unable to connect to my Microsoft account (for Skype connection) through my Vodafone line. The repeated attempts by Vodafone technicians and my communication with TP-Link did not solve the problem. As soon as I replaced the router with another one from a different company, the problem was automatically resolved. I don't know if it was a coincidence, but with this replacement, another malfunction issue with Netflix (significant delays in loading Netflix on my mobile phone) also disappeared. I should note that these problems were not due to my mobile phone, my telephone line, or a fault in the router, because my mobile phone connected normally to Skype: (1) through this specific router, installed on a Nova/Forthnet line, (2) through two other routers from my Vodafone line, (3) through another Vodafone line with a different router.
It disconnects every day (about 3-5 times a day). I also tried to change some settings in the menu and it kept crashing and not accepting them. Make the firmware better!
The watermelon is terrible, rarely reaching speeds up to 70 mbps. I had to buy a Xiaomi router and finally saw the light!!
It disconnects every now and then. They couldn't fix its inconvenient menu. Spend 10 euros more and get a more reliable and user-friendly one.
I installed it within 10 minutes! Very easy to install, just take a look at the manual. If you know a little about router installation, it's a piece of cake.
It was a worthy purchase that initially gave me some trouble during installation, but it was resolved through a phone call to Vodafone's technical support. The Wi-Fi speed is very good with an ADSL connection, and there are no disconnections. Purchased on 5/01/21

I have had it for at least 2 years, I set it up once and never had a problem again. It works morning, night, during power outages, and even during quarantine. Obviously, it doesn't give you ethernet speeds, but now the whole house has internet. I have it as a repeater
The worst purchase I have made. After setting it up with the appropriate settings and after communicating with Vodafone, it does not connect at all in its settings to make any changes, even though I have tried different browsers and devices. Even though I reset it, the problem was not fixed. My connection has crazy fluctuations, up to 4 Mbps lower than what I had with an old router that Hol had given me once. I will try to return it.
It presents problems with the connections via wifi. The connection of my iPhone and iPad often fails and I need to restart the modem in order to establish a connection. If you set a static IP on the MAC address of the devices, the problem may be resolved. Also, if you live in an area with many nearby wifi networks, you will need to configure the wifi signal to be transmitted from a specific channel because otherwise, in the auto setting, you will constantly experience disconnections
And I also had a Thomson that broke after many years. The TP-Link modem upgraded the Wi-Fi in my house. I connected it with Wind with the help of a company representative. It is difficult to set up.
The old modem/router Thompson was terrible (still works, needed a hard reset and kept it as a backup) and I replaced it with this one. It needs to be set up by declaring the country and provider, as it will also require the username and password of the connection line. It synchronizes with the same settings and has a greater range for the wireless network. Time will tell about its reliability. It is a good value for money at €25 for simple use
I initially had it all good. After a while, it would change on its own to factory settings and freeze, and I had to keep reconfiguring it all the time. I did a firmware update hoping it would fix something, but it didn't change. Now I have put a fan underneath it because it overheats and freezes so much that it can't even access the router's webpage, and soon I will throw it away
It was installed as a replacement for the TD5136v2 by Forthnet. The first impressions are very good, both in terms of DSL performance and Wi-Fi range. Especially if you make 2-3 adjustments, since it is unlocked, it is perfect for its price for a home network.
EDIT after 1 year and something:
I also had similar problems with 1-3 desynchronizations per day, either with the 2017 firmware or the 2018 one.
Recently, I upgraded to the 2021 firmware, which is for V4 even though mine is V3. The router not only did not brick, but since then all the problems have been solved and it is very stable. It has not disconnected once in the past 3 months!
Of course, you do it at your own risk if you want to!
I bought this specific modem for greater range and reliability. Unfortunately, although it does have a greater range, it significantly increased my ping compared to before and did not help with the speed even though I changed various settings. Of course, my connection is generally slow compared to others that exist. I would not recommend it to someone who has similar conditions of provision like mine.
Replaced the provided by forthnet, technicolor td5136v2 which itself was not that bad but had some issues that bothered me. Mainly with the wifi in certain modes (sluggish when using wpa instead of wpa2, but it's fine if you know) and the insecure menu (you can access it without a password as long as you know the URL that takes you to the router settings) and occasional restarts when it slows down for no reason.
If you're bothered by your provided or old router that has connectivity issues (disconnects, poor wifi, freezes), I think this is an affordable good solution without the aforementioned problems.
That being said... It is reliable, stable in connection, and has good wifi (in terms of range and compatibility). Occasionally restarts and slows down, and sometimes a device refuses to connect to the wifi, but overall it can be considered "stable" especially in its price range. It locks a little better or the same as the technicolor (but not worse). Of course, since I have a good line (locking at 16-17mbps), I don't have an opinion on how it performs on unstable poor lines. However, I've heard good things from others.
The setup was easy (at least if you know what you're doing) and everything was configured through the GUI. Be careful, as I installed the wind firmware version on my forthnet network, it came with a default adsl user, a winduser or something like that. The router did lock at 16-17mbps, as much as my line supports, but I had some kind of bandwidth control (it wouldn't download more than 4mbps). And it repeated after a restart, so I realized something was not right. Then I entered the forthnet adsl user credentials (which I had, otherwise you can request them from forthnet) and after a new restart, it connected normally, meaning I could download as much as my lock allows (the bandwidth control/limit was gone).
As for its capabilities, it has the "known" and "essential" ones, while in the extras, it supports Guest Wifi with a different SSID and password (same channel) where you can also set bandwidth control (if your neighbor asks for it). I haven't tested it yet, but that's what I see in the menu.
It has a Wifi on/off button and WPS (two different ones). It doesn't have USB and it's not for file sharing with the 2.4ghz wifi N it supports (for that, look for someone with AC and above).
In short, it's better than the one it replaced in my own conditions and network. I use it in a small house with few connections (2 laptops, 1 mobile). If you're going to replace your problematic provider-provided router (one that broke or one that never worked properly), I recommend choosing this one for €20, I think it's worth it (it's also sold in wind/forthnet stores at the same price). We're talking about ADSL (not vDSL).
P.S. It has telnet, which works out of the box on unbranded versions. There you can tweak more advanced settings like SNR, etc. For the simple and most useful ones, the Web-GUI is enough and it's sufficient for 98% of users.
However, if you get it in the wind/forthnet version (branded version) with modified firmware, they have changed the telnet password (it's not the same as the GUI) and you have to find it to connect. Personally, because of my "job" and this thing bothering me, I "discovered" it by looking at the settings file that you get as a backup and opening it with a suitable program since it's not in txt format. You may find it on the internet who it is (I won't write it here, sorry), but the process is common with other routers that play tricks so that the user cannot access the CLI and tamper with their support (they want only themselves to access it). However, since I bought it (anyway, I am not with wind isp), the equipment belongs to me and I should have full access to it and the CLI (not that I ultimately needed to do anything with it).
P.S. The antennas are not like the ones in the photo here on skroutz (they are not pointed, they are slightly larger and more modern, also they do NOT change, they are fixed)
I had the provider's router for years and from a certain point on, not all devices were connecting to the internet immediately and I had to restart it. It also frequently disconnected and I generally had connectivity issues, not so much speed. With the TD-W8961N, I solved all the problems. All the devices in the house connect directly and steadily, and I also noticed a slight increase in speed. I highly recommend it.
