Description

The end of the Civil War and the imposition of military dictatorship define the time limits of the historical period that the title of this book characterizes as a fragile democracy: a peculiar combination of authoritarianism and democracy, exclusion and prosperity, ideological regression and cultural spring. Examining the fragile democracy under this perspective (or, according to other aggressive determinations, "difficult", "intolerant", "limited", "insecure", "controlled", "disciplined", "selective", "guarded", etc.) condenses, in a particular but revealing way, the main contradictions that run through modern Greek political history. The aim of this book - as indicated by its subtitle - is not the overall political and social study of the fragile democracy, but only its investigation from a specific perspective, the one concerning the historical formation of political factions, the presence and action of political parties on the electoral scene, and the restrictive conditions that sealed the evolution of parliamentary institutions until their violent overthrow on April 21, 1967. It is a study that refers to the political history of post-civil war/pre-dictatorship Greece, structured with the guiding axis of the electoral process. The systematic analysis of electoral results thus fits into a broader framework and serves the classic axiom that "history is the politics of the past and politics is the history of the present".
