Description

Ioannis Svoronos (Mykonos 1863 - Athens 1922), Director of the Numismatic Museum, President of the Archaeological Council of the State and (since 1918) professor of numismatics at the University of Athens, publishes a comprehensive study on a particularly interesting subject. His research is based on the examination of ancient and Byzantine coins and works of art. The double-headed eagle (the royal eagles of the Palaiologos) essentially represents the refinement and perfection of an ancient symbol, whose roots can be traced back to the ancient peoples of the East. Ioannis Svoronos does not overlook, of course, the contemporary uses of the medieval symbol. Moreover, his study was initially presented as a lecture on December 2, 1913, following the victorious Balkan Wars, in front of King Constantine. Svoronos elaborates and promotes the observations of Spyridon Lambrou (in the Neos Hellenomnimon, vol. VI of 1909) and other contemporary writers (N. Politis, N. Vei), that the double-headed eagle is a symbol of the National Idea and the immortality of Hellenism, concealing a mysticism (about the petrified king) and the hope for the resurrection of the Race and the Byzantine Empire.
