Description

The proposal of my former students to release in photocopy edition "The Greek Troops of 1821" pleases me greatly, because I think that the reissue of this book, which had been out of print for many years, will equip both history researchers and the wider public, especially educators, with a work that will help them better understand that significant era. It is also a fortunate moment, as the publication is taking place now, when we celebrate the 150 years since the outbreak of the Revolution of 1821.
With this work, the reader will be able to learn some basic and necessary elements of the Struggle, which will allow them to comfortably follow the genesis of the revolutionary army, its various stages of development, its supply, and especially the psychology of its men. The transformation of simple Greek peasants, shepherds, artisans, etc. into revolutionary mobs at first, and then their differentiation into military units that gradually begin to realize their duties and their great mission, is truly very interesting. Particularly noteworthy is the role played by the main cores of the new Hellenism's fighting forces, the armatoloi and klephts, who established the tactics of guerilla warfare, the only living martial tradition of the nation during the period of Ottoman rule.
