Description

Panasonic is pleased to announce all the details regarding its new full-frame mirrorless cameras LUMIX S1R and S1.

The LUMIX S1R and S1 feature a full-frame 35mm CMOS sensor and are based on the L-Mount standard, offering an excellent balance of image quality and photographic control, along with distinctive image stabilization and advanced video recording.

The new Lumix S series cameras aim for unrestricted image quality with high resolution, unprecedented image gradations, and superior color performance. The high-speed and high-precision autofocus system, based on advanced lens control technology, the sensor, and the new Venus Engine image processor work together to ensure the user can capture their subject with exceptional focus accuracy, without failures.

The Lumix S1 and S1R also offer top-level video recording performance in their class (4K 60p/50p), instinctive handling as expected by demanding users, durable construction for tough use in photographic missions, long lifespan, and expandability.

The LUMIX S1R features a full-frame (36mm x 24mm) CMOS sensor with 47.3 Megapixels, ranking it at the top of its class with the world's highest resolution in a full-frame mirrorless camera, thus pursuing the highest level of photographic expression. In addition to incredible detail capture capability, and despite the extremely high number of pixels, this sensor delivers a high S/N ratio by leveraging its high light capture efficiency. Additionally, the S1R features – for the first time in a full-frame mirrorless camera – a High Resolution mode, offering the ability to shoot with an astonishing 187 Megapixels!

The LUMIX S1 features a full-frame (35.6mm x 23.8mm) CMOS sensor with 24.2 Megapixels with a wide dynamic range, excellent high sensitivity performance, always maintaining a natural yet sharp capture, thanks to its ample light collection efficiency at the pixel level. The high light collection efficiency is due to the new aspherical microlenses placed over each pixel.

The LUMIX S1 is designed for professional video recording use, delivering top levels of cinematic quality, taking advantage of the unprecedented expressive performance that a full-frame camera can offer.

The LUMIX S1 offers a wide variety of gamma curves, including standards such as Cinelike D/V and Like709. The new Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) profile allows recording with an even wider dynamic range with rich colors (Like2100) to mimic the capabilities of the human eye.

The LUMIX S1 allows video recording up to 4K 60/50p 4:2:0 with 8 Bit directly to the SD or XQD card. 4:2:2 recording can be achieved from the HDMI output. In 2019, Panasonic will offer a software key that will unlock the ability to record 4K 60/50p 4:2:2 10 Bit via HDMI output and 30p/25p/24p in 4:2:2 with 10 Bit internally to memory cards. This upgrade will offer V Log with the top dynamic range in its class to the LUMIX S1.

The High Speed mode offers 2x slow motion at 60fps in 4K, and slow motion up to 6x in Full HD with rates up to 180fps.

Panasonic's advanced AF system combines contrast detection focusing with Panasonic's unique DFD technology, and with ultra-high-speed processing, it offers focus that is both precise and fast.

To achieve such high speed and accuracy, the Venus Engine processor, the CMOS sensor, and the new LUMIX S lenses work together and communicate at 480fps, allowing the system to react instantaneously in 0.08 seconds. Finally, the AF system works in very low light, at the incredible value of -6 EV.

The S1R and S1 have added face, eye, and pupil detection systems to ensure perfect focus on portraits. Additionally, the AF function has been enhanced with Advanced Artificial Intelligence Technology that detects whether we are photographing people, cats, dogs, or birds.

For fast-moving objects, the burst mode offers us 9 fps (frames per second) with AFS focus or 6 fps (with continuous focus). The 6K Photo mode allows burst shooting at 30fps and offers 18 Megapixel JPEG photos, while the 4K Photo mode offers bursts at 30 or 60fps with 8 Megapixel resolution photos.

The S1R and S1 feature Dual Image Stabilizer. Panasonic with Dual I.S. (Dual Stabilizer) combines the two successful image stabilization systems. The 5-axis stabilizer inside the body and the 2-axis Optical Stabilizer (O.I.S.) in the lens. The 5-axis stabilizer dampens camera shake for up to 5.5 stops lower speeds than those usually safe for handheld shooting. Additionally, the O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) increases the overall stabilization effect to 6 stops and eliminates shake from a wide range of camera vibrations, both in photography and video shooting.

To capture the decisive moment, the photographer frames the image through an unparalleled clarity electronic viewfinder (EVF), as it uses a 5.76 million dots OLED screen – making it the highest resolution electronic viewfinder in the world.

The screen on the back of the camera is a high-resolution 2.1 million dots TFT LCD, 3.2 inches in size, 3:2 aspect ratio, and tilts on three axes.

The professional character of the S1R and S1 is complemented by features useful for professionals, such as the dual memory card slot, for both SD and XQD cards, the full-size HDMI output (Type A), and the 3.5mm jacks, both for microphone input and headphone output.

Panasonic currently offers three lenses for the LUMIX S system.

A tool for photography and video work! Especially after the latest firmware update with 6K open gate internal and 12-bit raw (via HDMI), it is the ultimate value for money!

This review is about the type kit: Kit (Lumix S 24-105mm F4 Macro OIS)

I am a professional videographer and I use the Panasonic S1 with the 24-105 lens for a long time. It is an excellent hybrid camera, good for both photography and video. Okay, the continuous autofocus, especially in video, is not the best, but it never bothered me much because I use manual focus. Also, the body is quite heavy, something I have gotten used to. It has an excellent grip and dual card slots for simultaneous video recording! (Nikon z6 ii, are you listening?) The EVF and screen have very good resolution. I would prefer the screen to be fully articulating. The battery lasts for 1.30 to 2 hours. It performs exceptionally well in terms of ISO. I often shoot at ISO 6400 and even up to 8000 without any major issues. I separately purchased the update that gives you vlog and some additional features for video. With the latest update, the camera can shoot in 6K, which increases its value compared to the competition. It has the ability to crop the sensor through the menu, so it increases the focal length of the lens by 1.5x (in the Apsc option). It records 4K 25p in full frame mode, but crops 1.5x when shooting 4K 50p. It also has the ability for slow motion up to 180fps in full HD. The lens range is not yet as extensive, but new ones are constantly being added both by Panasonic and Sigma.

One of the most underrated cameras on the market.

    Positives:
    - Incredible low light performance. I tested shooting video at 12800 iso and the footage was perfectly usable.
    - Dynamic range and colors. The files can withstand heavy editing without any loss.
    - Video options: 10-bit, rich bitrates, and log.
    - Menu and ergonomics. The size and grip provide a perfect hold. Many options for customizing the various buttons.
    - Incredibly fast and accurate autofocus in photography. In single point autofocus mode, it works instantly.
    - Amazing stabilization. In "Boost I.S." mode, it's like having it mounted on a tripod.
    - A plethora of various features such as Hi-Res mode, timelapse modes, 6K photo, sheer overlay, and many more.

    Negatives:
    - CAF in video, for those who need it. It definitely lags behind other companies in this aspect.
    - Options for affordable prime lenses *EDIT: with the launch of Panasonic's 1.8 primes and Sigma's f/2 contemporary, there are now decent lens options for all budgets

Perhaps the most comprehensive mirrorless system for photography and video. Certainly, all cameras have their positives and negatives, but this particular series of models as camera bodies are truly powerful, even if they have high prices. At least here, you get what you pay for!

If there is a camera that does it all, and by that I mean video and photography, and very well at that, it is the Panasonic S1.
Unbelievable video in fps options and in low light situations.
Photography with sharp sensors with tremendous dynamic range & shadow recovery.
The best stabilization in a full frame body.
The best electronic viewfinder by far.
Heavy body with a very good grip for long hands and those who prefer DSLR handling.
Weaknesses: the continuous autofocus in video (Sony has it) & price.
