Description

The Cyprus issue is paradoxical. It has not been resolved to this day, even though peaceful solutions have been evident since at least 1968. This book examines this unique Cypriot situation from four different perspectives. Firstly, it examines the historical trajectory of the problem from 1948 onwards, with the belief that shedding light on mistakes and missed opportunities will reveal the scope of peaceful and sustainable solutions. Secondly, it emphasizes nationalism and the rejection of the "Other," whose role has been crucial in the conflict and non-resolution. The narratives dominant in Greece and Cyprus do not contribute to overcoming the confrontation; instead, they perpetuate it. Thirdly, it thoroughly explores the role of Britain, Turkey, the United States, and of course, Greece. Fourthly, it identifies the most significant obstacles to a final resolution and seeks a peaceful and sustainable solution. The study's concluding finding is that in order to find a sustainable solution, it is necessary to consider that the role of endogenous factors, such as ethnic conflict, has been more decisive than that of external factors.
