Description
"The Birds" is Aristophanes' most extensive surviving comedy, rich in fantastical inspirations and linguistic virtues, as well as being one of the most spectacular.
Pisthetaerus, who embodies in the most characteristic way the dynamism, inventiveness, and ambition of the Athenians, convinces the birds to build a great fortified city in the sky, among the gods and humans. The gods, no longer having a way to communicate with the earth, are forced to negotiate, and Pisthetaerus demands and receives, as the price of peace, the sovereign power of Zeus. He marries Basileia, the divine treasurer who guards the thunderbolts, and thus becomes the ruler of the universe.
The interpretive edition (ancient text, translation, interpretive comments) of "The Birds" by Fanis Kakridis, first published in 1974, is now a classic work and is considered one of the top philological editions of the comedy internationally.
In the 45 years that have passed, Fanis Kakridis, by summarizing all the recent philological research, enriched his interpretive material and incorporated it into the revised edition of the University of Crete Publications, while also updating certain points of commentary and translation, and adding two important chapters, the "Selected" and the "Parallel," which in one way or another shed light on or complement the interpretation of the comedy.
Especially noteworthy is Fanis Kakridis' translation proposal, which combines the robust language of modern Greek with respect for the original, and serves as a model for translating ancient texts.
