The hero of the book, John, is trying to quit alcohol. However, he suddenly loses control and finds himself waking up in his living room with a dead girl. Before he can understand what happened, his phone rings: It's his older brother, Mark, the person he always turns to. Mark convinces him to bury the girl in the Carnival Falls forest; but John, tormented by guilt, decides to dig up the girl and discover what happened.
However, when he attempts it, everything collapses: no body is found, and his brother's perfect life is revealed to perhaps not be so perfect. John is plagued by questions, guilt, memories - everyone seems to know about this case, except for him - and the reader.
