Description

The richness of a language – any language – lies in its words. The word is the basic building block of speech; the word signifies, constructs, composes, produces and is produced, recalls images, evokes associations, and moves with its literal and metaphorical meaning and its musicality. Therefore, the correct learning of a language begins with the precise knowledge of the meaning or meanings that a word has and its correct usage.

This applies to all languages and especially to Greek, which has a long but unified life. There are Greek words that have been used continuously for centuries by generations of people, Greeks and foreigners alike. In this historical journey, some words have survived unchanged, others have changed in meaning or are pronounced and written differently. The changes not only did not wear them out but added polysemy and magic to them, and they bear undeniable witness to the continuity and unity of our language, provided we are able to understand the function of its elements.

This is precisely the purpose of the "Language Exercises Bank," to help those interested in the correct learning of the Greek language. It is addressed to educators who teach our language, as an aid in their work, and to those who are learning it, as a means of practicing their knowledge and correct usage of it. For this reason, we deemed it necessary to include exercises that refer to the language textbooks of middle and high school.

The book consists of two parts, the statement and the solution of the exercises, and is divided into ten sections containing exercises relevant to the theme of each section. This division is not, of course, absolute, as exercises contained in one section could potentially be exercises of another section. Can one, for example, separate the spelling of words from their etymological origin or punctuation from syntax?

Our intention is not to formulate some rules nor to request the identification of linguistic phenomena as they appear in our speech. We consider it much more important for someone who speaks and writes Greek to be able to utilize all the possibilities it offers, to transform its structures, to choose the precise word, to combine the appropriate words, to handle the verbal wealth at their disposal with ease, and to make their speech vivid with every expressive means. This is our goal.

The second part of the book is dedicated to the solution of the exercises because we believe that the essence of the exercises lies more in their answers than in their statements.

Finally, for easier use of the book, the user can search for the exercise they want, either from the word index at the end, by referring to the relevant section, or through the references, which indicate where many of the exercises are mentioned.
