Valerian has been used for hysterical conditions, overstimulation, insomnia, migraines, cramps, intestinal colic, rheumatic pains, dysmenorrhea, nervous conditions. 

Its main uses are for calming and hypnotic reasons, while it is also used as an antispasmodic and sedative. It is also recommended for anxiety and neurological sleep disorders. Valerian is used as a sedative even during the day in cases of overexcitement.
