We are in the year 674 AD. The ships of Caliph Muawiyah I have surrounded Constantinople and threaten to besiege it. Emperor Constantine IV needs money to ensure the successful defense of the city, so he assigns an important mission to his trusted soldier, Asterios. He and his mute cousin by birth travel to the now Arab-occupied Damascus to return a treasure to their emperor. Their ally in this difficult mission becomes the caliph's daughter, Aazin, a young woman with high knowledge and skills.
