Britt-Marie can't stand disorder - even a drawer full of mixed cutlery can completely throw her off. She also wakes up at the same time every day and eats her meals exactly when she should, because that's what civilized people do.
She's not aggressive - quite the opposite. It's just that sometimes people misinterpret her well-intentioned remarks and see them as malicious criticism.
But at sixty-three, Britt-Marie feels like she's had enough. After forty years, she decides to end her marriage, leave her home, and find a job in the only place she can: Borg, a village destroyed by the economic crisis and almost in ruins. Britt-Marie, who hates football, becomes the coach of a team of teenagers with no hope. She, who hates noise and dirt, now lives in a space full of rowdy children, walks on muddy floors, and shares a living space (literally) with a rat.
And yet, in this inhospitable environment, Britt-Marie feels that she becomes more useful to those around her every day. She even experiences something even more unexpected: she is flirted with by a friendly and charming police officer!
