Description

[...] The present study focuses on the translation of the Holy Scriptures by N. Vamvas. Specifically, it examines the translation of the entire Holy Scriptures in Constantinople, which was compiled by Archimandrite (and later Metropolitan of Tornovo) Hilary of Sinai on behalf of the B.F.B.S. There is a historical relationship between these two translations. Although they are clearly distinct and independent translations, they represent successive stages of the same effort by the Bible Society to create a translation of the Holy Scriptures for the Greeks. Furthermore, these translations are closely connected, not only as two aspects of the same issue, but also because the failure of the Bible Society's first translation led to the composition of the second translation, not in the Orthodox Metropolis of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, but first in the Ionian Islands (1829-1833) and finally in free Greece (1833 onwards), where the prevailing political climate ensured the possibility of success for the project. Thus, the issue of Hilary's translation is examined within the context of the prehistory of Vamvas' translation.
