Description
The Swiss folklorist (par excellence of European folklore) Max Luthi is considered one of the most important international researchers of folk (oral) poetry. His top work is this book with the eloquent title and especially its subtitle: "Folk Tale as Poetry. Aesthetics and Anthropology" (1975). With aesthetics, he seeks the literary form of the fairy tale, with anthropology, the image of man and his world. He observes that, despite the countless variations of the various narratives, a particular type of person always reappears. He also believes that beauty is the first and foremost in the fairy tale. But the presence of the fairy tale hero and heroine is equally important alongside beauty. What is particularly significant is that both these elements are shaped without any predetermined purpose, spontaneously, only with what the storytellers liked and thought. A deeper reflection was also formed accordingly. For example, Luthi mentions the symbolic idea that invariably prevails in folk tales that beauty is the external appearance of goodness, ugliness is the external appearance of evil. Good heroines are inherently beautiful, bad ones are ugly. The book provides answers to the main issues related to the fairy tale: wildness, the conflict between good and evil, the form of the hero and heroine, the concept of symbol, the pattern of transformation, etc. An invaluable asset of the book lies in its pure language, far from a theoretical language, as is customary in such cases.
