Description

[...] This book helps, among other things, to understand that whatever one may say to define translation, directly or indirectly, will ultimately lead to the realization that it is a painful, multidimensional, and creative struggle of the translator to "give birth" to a secondary text that is always equivalent to the primary one. The authors of the book try - and succeed - to make this multidimensional and truly creative linguistic process scientifically evident (explicit). By going through a very useful and linguistically penetrating examination of the approaches that have been made in translation so far, they soberly and convincingly argue that translation is not only theory or practice, just as form is not only meaning. Translation is everything. Just as the character of every linguistic creation is by nature comprehensive and complex. This starting point leads the authors to a very realistic and contemporary linguistic position on translation: that it must be understood and analyzed as a transition from the level of "speech" (linguistic action) of the translated text to an "intermediate" level, which combines the "language" (linguistic system) of the translated and translating language, in order to then be elevated to the level of the system of the translating language and culminate in the level of speech of the translating language, i.e. in the translated text.[...]
