Description

The present third edition of "International Law" is updated and revised with new bibliographic references, developments in case law and practice up to 2017.

International Law is a collective effort for a modern introduction to International Law. The authors of the volume, a total of 19 Greek international lawyers active in Greece and abroad, present in a comprehensive manner the main manifestations of International Law in the individual sections of the work. The material has been systematized and distributed into 7 Parts, which are analyzed in 27 Chapters, each of which includes domestic and foreign literature and a table of contents.

In the unique thematic of each Chapter, all the most important issues concerning International Law are analyzed and an attempt is made to demonstrate the important role that International Law plays as an autonomous legal system, with its own principles and institutional dimension, in the organization and functioning of the International Community.

In particular, the First Part, entitled "Law in the International Community," examines the issues of the nature and functioning of International Law, the historical evolution of international law, its sources, and the relationship between international and domestic law.

In the Second Part, "Subjects of International Law," significant chapters of the subject matter concerning the concept of State and recognition of States, International Organizations, and individuals and other subjects of international law are presented.

Furthermore, in the Third Part, "The Territorial Dimension of International Law and Jurisdiction," the issues of territory and acquisition of territorial sovereignty, the jurisdiction of States, extraterritoriality/asylum, and the critically important Law of the Sea (with an analysis of issues concerning baselines, internal waters, the territorial sea, international straits, the contiguous zone, the continental shelf, the Exclusive Economic Zone, especially in relation to Greece, the high seas, the international seabed, and the delimitation of maritime zones) are presented.

In the Fourth Part, "International Legal Proceedings," equally important chapters on "Law of International Treaties," "Unilateral Declarations," and "Memoranda of Understanding" are included.

In the Fifth Part, "Responsibility and Assertion of Claims in International Law," chapters on the international responsibility of States and International Organizations, as well as the assertion of claims at the international level and Diplomatic Protection, are included.

In the Sixth Part, "Peaceful Settlement of Disputes in International Law," chapters on the settlement of disputes by the International Court of Justice (including issues such as the organization of the ICJ, jurisdiction by way of counter-claims, the force and execution of its decisions, interpretation and revision of decisions, and advisory jurisdiction) and International Arbitration and Diplomatic Methods of Dispute Settlement are included.

Finally, in the Seventh Part, "Special Issues of International Law," the most specific and equally vital chapters for International Law on the Law of the Use of Force, International Humanitarian Law in Armed Conflicts, International Criminal Law, international protection of human rights, International Economic Law, and International Environmental Protection are included.

The edition is accompanied by an alphabetical index of all the basic terms of International Law that the reader can find in the book, as well as detailed tables of abbreviations that appear in the individual Chapters and the contributors to the work with their qualifications.

In conclusion, the ambition of this third updated and revised edition is for the Law of the International Community to be a user-friendly guide not only for those who study and apply International Law but also for all those who wish to get to know this dynamic field of legal science up close.
