In the ironic comedy "The Physicists," Dürrenmatt deals - with his well-known black humor - with the absurdity of his time. He focuses on the destructive consequences that science can have both for humanity and for the scientists themselves. These consequences frighten him, but his anxiety is cleverly hidden behind the satire of scientific and political power. A. Minotis, in an interview with the newspaper To Vima in March 1963 - five days before "The Physicists" premiered at the National Theater, directed by Dürrenmatt himself - had said that Dürrenmatt with "The Physicists" "ridicules humanity in order to benefit it."

On the surface, the play deals with the issue of the scientist's responsibility; essentially, however, it concerns all areas of collective life. Dürrenmatt elevates this issue to a collective problem, arguing that such problems can only be solved by all people together - individual efforts to solve them are doomed to fail. Of course, collective action presupposes the existence of some hope, and this is exactly the foundation of "The Physicists." As the author himself stated in an interview, "The Physicists" is precisely the theater of unjustifiable expectation, of irrational, invincible hope.

"The Physicists" is another title by the great Swiss writer that is added to the catalog of Rois publications. Although it was written in 1962, it remains a highly topical text that does not offer ready-made answers, but involves us in a game of thought. Dürrenmatt ultimately places us not in front of his heroes, but in front of our own selves - the play is nothing but a mirror.

In addition to the introduction and the epilogue, the edition includes a preface by the (prematurely deceased) academic Epaminondas Vampoulis, a complete bibliography of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's works, a complete list of productions of "The Physicists" (for Greece and Cyprus), as well as photographic material from productions of the play.
