Description
Antigone, the oldest of Sophocles' surviving plays, is, according to Hegel's judgment, the most excellent and complete work in the ancient and modern world. In our era, it was shaped within the great wars of the 20th century, among the unburied dead, the guilt of those who survived; it passed into the hands of great creators - R. Rolland, J. Anouilh, B. Brecht, A. Gide, H. Boll, M. Yourcenar, S. Heavey, Y. Ritsos, Aris Alexandrou - illuminating the "terrible" of man, the "demonic machine" of all forms of power. G. Steiner recorded the hundreds of Antigones that were performed on the stages and battlefields of the planet.
This volume is a "double book". In the first one, the classic text is transcribed into modern Greek and extensively commented upon. The second book welcomes, for the first time in Greek literature, three significant essays inspired by Sophocles' play, by Fr. Holderlin (1802), S. Kierkegaard (1843), and M. Heidegger (1943). Each essay is interpreted and commented upon separately. The final reception is the lyrical rendition of the Choruses of the play by the itinerant Stefanos Gionas in Klagenfurt, Austria.
An Antigone in the midst of Greek and German spirit, as "a counter-current of speech that opposes speech," as Holderlin summarized the play.
