Description

Fake, absurd, deficient, deprived are some of the names used by mathematicians of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to describe the negative numbers that had gradually begun to enter their lives. However, as we will see, negative numbers are not frightening at all. They are simply a new tool that we will use to incorporate into our mathematical world concepts that we were already using: the year 480 B.C., temperature 12 degrees below zero, debt of €1,500 are all concepts represented by negative numbers.

Next, we will travel to the world of Geometry to get to know (or remember) the basic concepts we use to depict our world. We will see how the practical Geometry of the Egyptians and Babylonians evolved into the first structured science in human history, the theoretical Geometry of the ancient Greeks.

The third part of this book aims to prepare for the recap exams that conclude the school year. With appropriately selected questions, we try to help the student ensure that they have studied the theory, and with some synthetic review exercises, we give them the opportunity to check to what extent they have understood this theory. Finally, we provide six sample exams, which we suggest the student take after completing their review, as a "dress rehearsal" in preparation for the school exams.
