Horror stories are not an invention of Edgar Allan Poe. Many authors who influenced his work—and even more who were influenced by him—wrote short stories that belong to supernatural literature. However, Poe's genius often overshadows their contribution to the genre. Even Bram Stoker, the author of the iconic "Dracula," is not known for his short stories.
